Entertaining the Past, Present, and Future

Janet Klein is a woman of many talents, and her passion for music is evident in every aspect of her life. As a performer, band leader, and musical archeologist, Klein is on a mission to uncover the rare and forgotten songs of the 1910s, 1920s, and 1930s. These songs, which were once a staple of vaudeville, the Victrola, and early sound films, are now largely unknown, but Klein is determined to bring them back to life. Klein and her band, the Parlor Boys, have performed at some of the most iconic venues in Hollywood and Los Angeles, including the historic Orpheum Theater and the Alex Theatre. They have also shared the stage with silent movies and early animated and musical film shorts, collaborating with animation historian Jerry Beck, at the Steve Allen Theater and Silent Movie Theatre in Hollywood. Although those venues are no longer in operation, Klein’s passion for the past continues to inspire her and her band. In addition to her live performances, Klein has also made prologue appearances for retroformat screenings and has collaborated with author, historian, and filmmaker Steven C. Smith and pianist and scholar Frederick Hodges on upcoming projects. She has also lent her voice to animation, most notably as Miss Langtree for Cartoon Network’s “Over the Garden Wall.”
Klein and the Parlor Boys have also had a successful international touring career, releasing 10 CDs since 1998. Their music is a unique blend of vintage and modern, reflecting Klein’s dedication to preserving the past while also pushing the boundaries of what is possible with music. The program at the Contemporary Club is part of the Smiley LIVE! concert series, which aims to bring people together through music. The event will include a question-and-answer segment, giving audience members the opportunity to learn more about Klein’s life and work.
