KRCL KRCL History With Original Fret N Fiddler

A 45-Year Legacy of Community Radio

Listeners’ Community Radio of Utah, or KRCL, has been a staple of the Salt Lake City community for nearly five decades. As we celebrate the station’s 45th birthday, we take a look back at its rich history and the impact it has had on the lives of its listeners.

Early Days of KRCL

KRCL’s journey began in 1978, when a group of local activists and community leaders came together to create a radio station that would serve the needs of the underserved and marginalized populations in the Salt Lake City area.

The show is broadcast live from the Fret and Fiddle studio in Salt Lake City, Utah. The show is hosted by Lewis Downey and features a rotating cast of guest musicians. The show is broadcast live on the internet and is available on the KRCL 90.9 FM website.

The Origins of Fret and Fiddle

Fret and Fiddle has its roots in the 1990s, when Lewis Downey first started hosting a weekly folk music radio program on a local station in Salt Lake City.

“It was a great experience, but I eventually left to pursue other opportunities.” “I was the host and co-writer of the show, which was a monthly comedy show that aired on the local PBS affiliate in Phoenix, Arizona. During its run, the show became a staple of the local comedy scene, with many comedians and performers getting their start on the show.” “I was the host and co-writer of the show, which was a monthly comedy show that aired on the local PBS affiliate in Phoenix, Arizona.
