KRCL KRCL History With Original Fret N Fiddler

A Legacy of Music Discovery

KRCL has been a staple in the community for nearly five decades, providing a platform for music discovery and connection. From its humble beginnings as a small, non-profit radio station to its current status as a beloved institution, KRCL has consistently demonstrated a commitment to serving the community.

Early Years

KRCL’s early years were marked by a passion for music and a desire to bring people together. The station’s founders, a group of music enthusiasts, saw an opportunity to create a space where people could come together to share their love of music. With a small budget and a lot of determination, they set out to build a radio station that would serve the community.

Fret and Fiddle is broadcast on Saturdays from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM.

The Birth of a Program

In 2001, Lewis Downey, a passionate music enthusiast, had a vision to create a weekly folk music radio program that would showcase a diverse range of traditional and contemporary folk music from around the world.

“It was a great experience, but I eventually left to pursue other opportunities.” “I was drawn to the idea of creating a new kind of comedy show that would appeal to a wider audience,” he says. “I wanted to create a show that would be more than just a comedy club, but a community.”

Creating a New Kind of Comedy Show

After leaving Desertaire, he began to explore new ideas and concepts for a comedy show that would appeal to a wider audience. He wanted to create a show that would be more than just a comedy club, but a community.
