KRCL KRCL History With Original Fret N Fiddler

A 45-Year Legacy of Community Radio

Listeners’ Community Radio of Utah, or KRCL, has been a staple in the Salt Lake City community for over four decades.

The show is broadcast live on the station every Saturday morning from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM.

The Birth of Fret and Fiddle

Fret and Fiddle was born out of a passion for folk music and a desire to share it with the community. Lewis Downey, the show’s creator and host, had a vision to bring together a diverse range of folk music styles from around the world. He wanted to create a platform where listeners could discover new music, learn about different cultures, and connect with others who shared similar interests.

The Show’s Format

Fret and Fiddle is broadcast live on Saturdays from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM. The show features a mix of music genres, including Celtic, British Isles, Quebecois, Old-Time, Tin Pan Alley, Cowboy and Western. The program is divided into segments, each focusing on a specific genre or theme. The show starts with a “Folk Frenzy” segment, where Lewis plays a selection of songs from various genres. The “Celtic Corner” segment features traditional Celtic music from Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. The “Quebecois Connection” segment showcases music from Quebec, Canada.

“I’ve been doing a lot of research on the show’s history, and I’ve come to realize that it’s not just a radio show, but a cultural institution.”

The Evolution of Red White and Blues

Red White and Blues has been on the air for over 40 years, with a rich history that spans multiple generations. The show’s format has evolved over the years, but its core mission remains the same: to celebrate American music and culture.

The Early Years

The show first aired in 1981, when Brian Kelm was just 25 years old. At the time, it was a small, local program that focused on blues and roots music.
