The orchestra is supported by the Northern Territory Government and the Australia Council for the Arts. The group’s mission is to provide a platform for emerging artists, to develop and present high-quality musical performances, and to engage with the local community. DSO also has a focus on indigenous music and has an ongoing collaboration with indigenous musicians and organisations.

  • Programming the annual concert season, including selecting repertoire, working with guest conductors, and collaborating with the music director
  • Conducting rehearsals and performances, ensuring high-quality musical performances
  • Developing and implementing artistic strategies to engage and inspire the community
  • Collaborating with the music director, board of directors, and other stakeholders to achieve the orchestra’s goals
  • Representing the DSO at external events, conferences, and performances

    The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of orchestral repertoire, a creative approach to programming, outstanding communication skills, and a passion for connecting with our diverse community.

    Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to lead and collaborate with musicians, staff and other stakeholders. Proven track record of successfully managing large-scale events, including concerts, festivals, and other performances. Ability to adapt to changing circumstances and prioritize tasks effectively. Adaptability, flexibility, and creativity are essential qualities in this role, as the position requires coordinating multiple tasks and stakeholders while maintaining a high level of musical quality and organization. Effective use of technology, including software and hardware tools, is also crucial in this role. The ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion is also a key requirement. This position requires a deep understanding of the music industry, including current trends, musical styles, and cultural sensitivities. The ideal candidate will be able to balance artistic and business aspects of the organization, ensuring that events are both musically successful and financially viable.

    This role requires significant time commitment in Darwin. The successful candidate will ideally be Darwin-based for most of the year. There is scope for a hybrid role between Darwin and working remotely.
