Big-Band Jazz Meets Poetry at Gina’s Good Life Music & Lounge

The Mile High Jazz Band is a 17-member ensemble, playing swinging big-band jazz music, supported by private donations and memberships, and by grants from Carson City, the Nevada Arts Council, and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Gina’s Good Life Music & Lounge, located inside the Carson Nugget, will host this unique event. The music is free, with a requested donation of $10. Gina’s is a smoke-free and climate-controlled venue, offering a well-stocked bar and interesting specialty drinks.

“On the Verge” features the 17-member band playing swinging songs on the theme of the evening in all its variations.

The band will play swinging songs on the theme of the evening, with each song relating to the theme in some way. This evening is unique, as each poem is followed by a tune that relates to it. Several tunes feature Jakki Ford singing with the band.

Pianist and bandleader David Bugli explained, “We’d like to tell you the tunes we will be playing, but that would spoil the fun. The audience can make connections between the poems and the tunes that follow them. You need to be there to experience it.”

The event will feature nine award-winning poets and readers, including Rita Geil, Terri Breeden, Ursula Carlson, Wayne Carlson, Krista Lukas, Melanie Perish, Susan Sara Priest, Timothy Rhodes, and Jesse James Ziegler, the Reno Poet Laureate.

  1. Some examples of the tunes that will be played include “Moonlight Serenade”, “In the Mood”, and “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore.”
  2. The tunes are all classics and are sure to get the audience swaying to the music.
  3. The poetry and music will be performed in an alternating pattern, with each poet or musician performing one poem or song at a time.

The event is free, with a requested donation of $10. The venue is smoke-free and climate-controlled, offering a comfortable environment for the audience. The bar and specialty drinks will be available for those who wish to enjoy a beverage during the performance.
